Hargrove wanted to portray a typical street scene in a small Irish town, but he needed to include some of the island's lush flowering plants. Like its island neighbor to the east, Ireland is rife with flowers whose colors would test the most prolific artist's palette. In the foreground of Hargrove's painting, we can see that his palette, and his talent, have well served his subject.
